We are looking for an experienced Manager of Construction to lead the safe, efficient, and predictable execution of construction activities for large capital projects within one of our execution portfolios (Fixed Plant Projects or In Situ Projects).
In this role, you will provide leadership and oversight for all construction execution activities, with accountability for field execution strategy, contractor management, construction performance, and delivery readiness. You will lead multi-disciplinary field teams and drive progress, accountability, and disciplined execution across all phases of construction. You will ensure construction activities are executed in alignment with project objectives, Suncor’s Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS), Safe Work Practices, and stage-gate project delivery requirements, while fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement. This role requires strong leadership presence, extensive field execution experience, and the ability to drive high performance across both internal teams and contractor organizations.

Minimum Requirements
Engineering degree, technical diploma, or equivalent combination of education and field experience
12 + years of experience in industrial construction and project execution within energy, mining, oil sands, or other major industrial environments, including at least 5 years in supervisory or management roles
Extensive experience leading large scale multi‑discipline construction teams (civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation)
Strong knowledge of construction execution planning, workface planning, field sequencing, contractor management and safety leadership
Proven ability to lead in complex field environments and influence diverse internal and contractor teams to achieve project objectives
Strong understanding of project controls, scheduling, and execution planning earned value management, and progress measurement practices
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, CWPs/IWPs, schedules, and quality documentation, and construction work packages.
Proven experience managing contractors in brownfield and/or greenfield industrial construction environments
Strong communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills
Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, operations, engineering teams, and contractor organizations
Strong commitment to safety, with experience establishing and supporting high-performance safety culture
Strong understanding of project governance, quality management systems, regulatory compliance, and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, PDF markup tools, and project controls and scheduling systems
Working knowledge of project delivery frameworks, operational excellence systems, and stage -gate project execution processes
Responsibilities
Lead overall construction execution strategy and field delivery for capital projects, ensuring alignment with project objectives, scope, schedule, cost, quality, and safety targets
Provide leadership and oversight to construction supervisors, discipline leads, contractor management teams, and field supervision, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and high performance
Ensure all construction activities are executed in compliance with Suncor OEMS, Safe Work Practices, project requirements, and regulatory obligations.
Develop and implement construction execution strategies, field sequencing plans, resource plans, and workface planning processes to optimize productivity and execution efficiency
Ensure construction readiness through the effective coordination of materials, permits, drawings, engineering deliverables, Construction Work Packages (CWPs), and Installation Work Packages (IWPs)
Drive construction schedule performance, productivity, and cost control, identifying performance gaps and implementing corrective actions as required.
Oversee contractor performance, including safety performance, execution quality, workforce effectiveness, adherence to scope, and contractual compliance
Lead constructability reviews and provide field execution input into project planning, engineering, and execution decision-making.
Identify, assess, and proactively manage field risks, constraints, and execution challenges, developing mitigation plans and escalating issues where required
Ensure effective integration between engineering, construction, completions, commissioning, operations, and project controls teams to support seamless project execution
Support turnover, punch management, system completions, and readiness activities to enable successful commissioning and start-up
Provide regular updates and reporting to project leadership and governance teams on construction progress, workforce performance, key risks, mitigation plans, and overall execution performance

This position is site-based in Fort McMurray, the location and shift are dependent on the portfolio and/or project requirements
