Job DescriptionJob Description Job Title: CNC Machinist (Journeyman or Unticketed) Job Description This role focuses on manufacturing high-precision metal components used in complex industrial refrigeration, compression, and process equipment systems. You will work in a modern, state-of-the-art machine shop, producing custom, low- and medium-volume parts to tight tolerances rather than high-volume mass production. The position involves full-cycle CNC milling work, including setups, programming, operation, and quality assurance for critical components used in demanding industrial applications. Responsibilities Set up, adjust, and operate CNC milling machines, including 5-axis mills, to produce precision components to specification. Interpret and work from engineering blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to plan machining operations and ensure dimensional accuracy. Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs, using Mastercam and machine controls, to achieve efficient and accurate machining processes. Perform tool selection, tool setting, and offset adjustments to maintain correct dimensions and surface finishes. Troubleshoot machining issues such as chatter, dimensional inaccuracies, surface finish problems, and tool wear, and implement corrective actions. Operate and oversee Okuma vertical milling machines, ensuring consistent performance and adherence to production requirements. Use overhead cranes safely to move and position heavy materials, workpieces, and fixtures on and off machines. Conduct in-process and final quality inspections using appropriate measuring tools and inspection techniques to verify tight tolerances and specifications. Document inspection results and maintain quality records in accordance with internal procedures and customer requirements. Work on both short-run custom jobs and longer production runs, adjusting workflows and setups as needed for different job types. Collaborate with other machinists, programmers, and production staff to resolve technical issues and continuously improve machining processes. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following all shop safety procedures and guidelines. Monitor machine performance and report any maintenance or repair needs to ensure minimal downtime and reliable operation. Essential Skills Proven CNC milling experience, including 5-axis machining, in a precision manufacturing environment. Strong ability to interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings. Hands-on experience performing setups, adjustments, operation, and offset changes on CNC mills. Practical CNC programming experience, including creating and editing programs at the machine or via CAM software. Demonstrated troubleshooting skills for machining issues, including dimensional and surface finish problems. Experience operating Okuma vertical milling machines or similar CNC vertical mills. Proficiency with Mastercam for programming CNC milling operations. Experience using overhead cranes to safely move and handle heavy parts and fixtures. Quality inspection and assurance experience, including the use of precision measuring tools and techniques. Experience working with tight tolerances in a high-precision machining environment. Both short-run and long-run machining work, with the ability to adapt to varied production needs. Additional Skills & Qualifications Journeyman CNC Machinist certification or equivalent experience; unticketed machinists with strong practical skills are also considered. Experience in industrial equipment manufacturing, particularly in refrigeration, compression, or process equipment applications. Familiarity with working in a custom fabrication environment where parts are often one-off or limited-run. Comfort working independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively within a team. Strong attention to detail, with a focus on accuracy, repeatability, and quality. Solid understanding of shop safety practices and safe use of overhead lifting equipment. Why Work Here? Work Environment The facility is a modern machine shop located in the southeast industrial area of the city, near a major commercial and shopping district. The shop focuses on machining components for compression and process piping applications, particularly for industrial and energy-related systems. You will work primarily on CNC milling equipment, including 5-axis and Okuma vertical mills, supported by Mastercam programming tools and overhead cranes for material handling. The shift schedule consists of four 10-hour day shifts, Monday through Thursday, from 5:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. The environment emphasizes safety, organization, and clear lines of authority, with a structured and well-defined workflow. Dress typically aligns with a conventional machine shop setting, including appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment suitable for a precision machining and industrial environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Calgary, AB. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $49.00 - $49.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
