Job Description
This role involves performing concrete formwork and rough carpentry on busy industrial construction sites in Coquitlam, BC. You will work closely with site leadership each day to review priorities, interpret blueprints, and complete a variety of tilt-up and structural concrete tasks, including panels, footings, slabs, retaining walls, stairs, and layouts. The position requires strong technical carpentry skills, the ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and a commitment to high-quality workmanship.
Responsibilities
Meet with the site superintendent daily to review priorities, understand project focus areas, and clarify expectations for the day.
Attend morning toolbox meetings to receive task assignments, participate in safety discussions, and coordinate with the site team.
Read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings to plan and execute formwork and layout tasks accurately.
Build and install formwork for tilt-up panels, footings, slabs, retaining walls, and stairs in a light industrial construction environment.
Understand and follow the complete footing, slab, panel, and underground layout process, including selecting appropriate materials and planning work sequences and methods.
Assist in preparing and setting up footing, slab, panel, and underground layouts to ensure accurate dimensions and alignment.
Perform various types of light industrial tilt-up formwork, ensuring forms are square, level, properly braced, and ready for concrete placement.
Use carpentry tools such as hammers, tape measures, squares, levels, and utility knives to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Verify measurements, check elevations, and confirm formwork accuracy before concrete pours.
Collaborate with other carpenters, laborers, and sub-trades to coordinate work and maintain smooth site operations.
Follow site safety procedures at all times, including participating in safety meetings and adhering to all safety guidelines and PPE requirements.
Work independently when required, managing time effectively to complete assigned tasks within project schedules.
Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Communicate clearly with supervisors and team members to report progress, raise issues, and support problem-solving on site.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5+ years of experience in construction as a Carpenter.
At least 4+ years of experience with concrete formwork and rough carpentry.
Proficiency in building and installing formwork for panels, footings, slabs, retaining walls, and stairs.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings with confidence.
Solid understanding of footing, slab, panel, and underground layout processes, including materials selection and work sequencing.
Experience working on commercial or industrial construction projects.
Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with site leadership, team members, and sub-trades.
Proven ability to work independently, stay motivated, and complete projects on time.
Reliable transportation and the ability to travel to various job sites as required.
Ownership of a complete carpenter’s tool belt, including hammer, tape measure, squares, levels, utility knife, and other necessary tools.
Consistent punctuality and reliability in attending work and meeting schedule expectations.
Ability to work productively in a fast-paced, busy construction environment while maintaining a strong focus on safety.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Tilt-up construction experience is an asset.
Red Seal Carpenter certification is considered a strong advantage.
Industrial construction experience is preferred.
Telehandler or telehandling experience is an asset.
Vehicle ownership is strongly preferred to access multiple sites.
Demonstrated ability to adapt to new processes and changing site conditions.
Comfort taking direction and collaborating with supervisors at all levels of experience.
Strong teamwork skills and the ability to contribute positively to a site crew.

Work Environment
You will work on active industrial construction sites that are busy, fast-paced, and highly safety-focused. Typical sites have a core team of around 15 company employees, with approximately 60 additional sub-trade workers on site at any given time, requiring clear communication and strong coordination. Safety is the top priority, supported by daily toolbox meetings, established procedures, and mandatory use of PPE. Standard hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with an eight-hour workday that includes a 15-minute morning break at 10:00 a.m. and a 30-minute lunch break, and there is potential for overtime depending on project needs. Work is primarily outdoors and on partially enclosed structures, involving exposure to typical construction site conditions such as noise, dust, varying weather, and working around heavy equipment and concrete operations. You will use standard carpentry tools and equipment daily, including your own tool belt with hammer, tape measure, squares, levels, utility knife, and other related tools.
