Scope
The Building Technician performs skilled technical work in the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of our systems and facilities. This role involves completing a variety of complex building maintenance tasks, monitoring building systems, and providing direction to staff and contractors as required.
Responsibilities
• Oversee daily operation of building and mechanical systems to ensure safe and efficient performance.
• Conduct scheduled inspections and operation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems.
• Monitor and adjust building equipment using DDC systems; investigate and respond to alarms or malfunctions.
• Support the development and execution of preventative maintenance programs.
• Operate and maintain building systems including boilers, chillers, AHUs, and related components.
• Assist in installing, servicing, and maintaining climate control systems, plumbing fixtures, and equipment.
• Contribute to contract preparation by developing specifications, obtaining quotes, and recommending awards.
• Monitor contractor and maintenance work to ensure compliance with City standards and timelines.
• Respond to requests for minor repairs involving electrical, carpentry, plumbing, furniture, and fixtures.
• Maintain chemical treatment of open and closed loop systems.
• Drive City vehicles to and from job sites as required.
• Supervise Building Maintenance staff, including training, scheduling, assigning work, and ensuring safety compliance.
• Support other staff and perform additional related duties as required.
Qualifications
• Completion of Grade 12
• An Interprovincial Certificate of Competency (Trades Qualification) as a Fourth-Class Power Engineer
• 5 years directly related technical and building maintenance/construction experience.
• Valid B.C. driver's license
• The successful candidate must obtain and maintain a valid Surrey Police Services (SPS) Security Clearance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Some supervision skills.
• Reads and works effectively from drawings, blueprints and schematics.
• Working knowledge of the various Building Codes and other applicable codes.
• Sound knowledge of hand/power tools, materials, equipment, and techniques used in building construction and maintenance.
• Sound knowledge of DDC systems, HVAC, Chiller and Boiler operating systems.
• Physical strength, stamina and hand/eye coordination to carry out the duties for the position.

Pay Grade: $44.42/HR (2024 Rates), Schedule C, 40 hours per week
Conditions of Employment
This position requires completion of an Surrey Police Services (SPS) Reliability Security Clearance.
