POSITION:Athletic Director - Middle LOCATION:Thompson Middle School REPORTS TO:Principal, TMS and the Superintendent of Schools, or designee. SCHOOL YEAR:2026-2027 (8/24/2026-6/30/2027) FUNDING:Local JOB DESCRIPTION: To provide every student at Thompson Middle School an opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity that will foster physical skills, a sense of worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of sport, and the principles of fair play. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE: ?Knowledge of all phases of athletics. ?Possession of good oral and written communication skills. ?Evidence of ability to work successfully at an administrative level. RESPONSIBILITIES: ?Organizes and administers the overall program of extracurricular athletics, both intramural and interscholastic, at Thompson Middle School. ?Assumes responsibility for coordination of the athletic program. ?Coordinates all athletic program events and activities with the Director of the Recreation Department, City of Newport. ?Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program. ?Assumes responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events. ?Hires officials and police officers as required, arranges for the attendance of the school physician, and assumes general responsibility for the proper supervision of home games. ?Arranges transportation for athletic contest participants. ?Assists the principal in the development of appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities. ?Verifies each athlete's eligibility according to established physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport. ?Prepares and administers the athletic program budget and orders supplies and equipment. ?Supervises all ticket sales and fund-raising events of the athletic program and assumes responsibility for proper handling of funds. ?Arranges all details of visiting teams' needs, gymnasium services, and field assistance, as appropriate. ?Makes arrangements for non-school use of playing fields and facilities. ?Coordinates all athletic activities and available facilities for practices and games. ?Administers the insurance program covering school athletes and assumes responsibility for all processing of reports and claims. ?Keeps records of the results of all athletic contests, and maintains a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award. ?Administers all interscholastic policies and procedures working within the confines of the rules and by laws of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League/ RIPCOA TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: $ 3,000.00 Stipend for 8/24/26-6/30/27 APPLICATIONS: Applicants apply through www.schoolspring.com Providing Students Opportunities and Access to the World Through Quality Education AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER The Newport School Department does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, sex, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, color, disability or veteran status.
