Position Summary:
The Aquatics Instructor delivers comprehensive swim instruction, coaching, and administrative support across the PE curriculum and after-school programs for students of all abilities. The role balances instructional duties with facility oversight—including equipment management, water quality checks, and maintenance coordination. Crucially, all instructors serve as lifeguards; while on lifeguard duty, they must focus exclusively on surveillance and emergency response, suspending all other tasks. The incumbent will prioritize, promote and safeguard the welfare of all ASD students and show commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Is responsible for the safety of swimmers at ASD aquatic facilities (PE curriculum aquatics and after school activities and sports) including the prevention of accidents and injuries and where these cannot be prevented responding in an appropriate way with first aid or emergency management procedures.
Assist with the teaching of aquatics in PE units as directed by the Aquatics Coordinator and/or Lead Aquatics Instructor and/or the PE teacher.
Communicate as required with PE teachers, Lead Aquatics Instructor and Aquatics Coordinator regarding students’ needs, skills and progress.
Ensures all equipment is maintained to the highest standards (safe, clean, stored correctly) and advises the Aquatics Coordinator when equipment needs repair or replacement.
Contributes to ensuring swimming pools and associated facilities are operational and maintained to the highest standards by checking water quality, cleanliness and identifying maintenance tasks.
Plan and conduct swim lessons based on Red Cross, ASCA, Swim England or equivalent curriculum.
Adapt instruction for students of varying abilities and ages
Enforce and promote Pool Rules, Child Protections Policies, Code of Conduct, Changing Rooms Rules, MOPH policies for Swimming pools facilities.
Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress through the Lead or Aquatics Coordinator
Maintain class attendance and progress reports
Assist with special aquatics programs or events when required following the working hours and agreements
Ensures pool and equipment is set up and packed up as required (including lane ropes) as requested by teaching, after school activity and coaching staff.
Is an active participant in the health and safety program by identifying, minimizing and eliminating hazards, completing incident and accident reports, providing first aid and ensuring facilities are locked and unlocked as required.
Contributes to the development of the team being an active participant in technical discussion, proposing readings and articles, developing assignments related with water activities and teaching methods.
Undertake ongoing training and professional development on a regular basis.
Undertake regular physical training to maintain levels of fitness including swimming.
Provide Lessons Plans when required
Provide Report Cards and technical feedback from students when required
Undertake Lifeguard duties when required
Other tasks as assigned by Lead Aquatics Instructor or Aquatics Coordinator
Knowledge & Skills:

Collaborate with and contribute to the Aquatics Team to complete assigned tasks.
Understand information and ideas and be able to communicate clearly in English (including oral, reading and written).
Computer Literate for both Mac and PC.
Ability to work independently and safeguard confidential information.
Demonstrated good organization, administrative and interpersonal skills.
Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies
Qualifications:
The Aquatics Instructor will have:
High school diploma or higher qualification
Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent
Current certification in CPR, First Aid or similar is an advantage
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred or Swimming Instructor certifications
Excellent swimming ability
Vast knowledge on different water sports and vast experience teaching swim lessons
Previous experience in a lifeguard role and educational environment
Required Documents:

Authenticated Education Diploma
Desirable skills:
Prior working experience in an education environment
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (English)
ASCA Level 1 or equivalent
