Animal DNA Analyst 1
Location: 335 Laird Rd, Suites 2, 3B, 4, 5, Guelph, ON N1G 4P7 CAN.
Position Overview
Entry‑level Laboratory Analyst performs technical procedures related to DNA analysis within a high‑throughput laboratory environment. Primary responsibilities include sample preparation, DNA extraction, DNA amplification, and electrophoresis to generate operational data. This role requires strict adherence to quality protocols, safety guidelines, and established standard operating procedures.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Perform routine high‑throughput molecular biology procedures, including sample preparation, DNA extraction, DNA amplification setup (PCR, qPCR & dPCR), and electrophoresis.
Operate and maintain specialized laboratory instrumentation, including thermal cyclers and capillary electrophoresis systems, utilizing accompanying data collection software.
Ensure compliance with laboratory procedures and quality assurance protocols to maintain sample continuity and integrity. Assist with QA/QC tasks to meet ISO17025 guidelines.
Document and maintain accurate laboratory records. Prepare standards and reagents, and complete daily, weekly, and monthly duties according to the analyst schedule.
Follow laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices to handle hazardous and biohazardous materials using the necessary precautions.
Coordinate and communicate clearly with colleagues within the Department to support operational efficiency and project management.
Your Profile
Qualifications Required
Education: Biological Technician Diploma or a similar technical course related to laboratory analysis. A B.Sc. in a relevant scientific discipline is an asset.
Technical Knowledge: Specialized knowledge and experience with DNA analytical procedures (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR setup), instrumentation (thermal cyclers, capillary electrophoresis), and related data collection software programs.
Sample Handling: Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures to ensure the continuity and integrity of samples through compliance with quality protocols.
Safety Awareness: Knowledge of and experience with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices for handling hazardous materials.
Qualifications Desired
Technical Skills: Excellent manual dexterity, precise record‑keeping, mathematical calculations, and problem‑solving skills.
Operational Attributes: High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and efficient time management to optimize laboratory processes.
Work Style: Ability to work independently on routine procedures following established Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions, while maintaining effective team collaboration.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
Focus & Multitasking: Require focus for extended periods and handle a high volume of samples over consecutive manipulations without error.
Environment: Regular exposure to potential biohazardous and chemically hazardous materials, and periodic exposure to visually unpleasant and malodorous samples.
Personal Protective Equipment: Requirement to wear laboratory coats, gloves, and safety goggles for extended durations.
Compensation: $22‑26 CAD per hour
