Job DescriptionJob Description Heavy Duty Mechanic Location: Edmonton, Alberta Pay: $38–$50/hour + $2/hour field premium Employment Type: Full-Time Tired of the Same Old Shop Routine? Here's a chance to work on something a little different. We're looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our Edmonton team, keeping a fleet of specialized rail maintenance equipment, heavy machinery, trucks and trailers running. This isn't your typical oilfield or mining job. You'll split your time between the Edmonton shop and the field, travelling throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and occasionally Manitoba to support rail construction and maintenance crews. During the busy summer season, you'll head out with field crews to keep equipment working. That means troubleshooting, wrenching on equipment and handling repairs right where the work is happening. Some trips can run up to two weeks at a time, followed by a few days back home. There are also occasional emergency callouts when equipment needs attention on site. When things slow down in the winter, you'll be back in the shop handling maintenance, repairs and getting equipment ready for the next season. If you enjoy working on heavy equipment, can troubleshoot your way through a problem and don't mind getting out of town, this could be a good fit. What You'll Be Working On Diagnosing and repairing heavy equipment, rail maintenance machinery, trucks, trailers and support equipment. Troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic and electrical issues. Performing preventative maintenance, inspections and scheduled servicing. Handling breakdowns and field repairs to keep crews working and equipment moving. Identifying equipment issues before they turn into bigger problems. Working alongside operators to keep equipment maintained, safe and ready for the job. Keeping service records and maintenance paperwork up to date. What We're Looking For Hands-on experience as a Heavy Duty Mechanic working on off-road equipment, heavy machinery, trucks or similar equipment. Journeyperson ticket is an asset, but not required. Experienced apprentices with a solid mechanical background are welcome. Background in construction, forestry, logging, industrial or heavy equipment would be a great fit. Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Comfortable working independently and out in the field. Willing to travel throughout Western Canada, primarily Alberta and Saskatchewan, with occasional trips into Manitoba. Valid Class 5 driver's licence. Own tools required. The Money & Perks $38–$50/hour , depending on experience (flexible for the right mechanic). Extra $2/hour when working in the field. Travel accommodations and meal allowance covered while away. $2.15/hour employer-paid RRSP contribution for every hour worked. No matching or employee contribution required. Schedule Summer / Field Season: Typically 10-hour days, 6 days on and 1 day off. Mostly day shifts, with some nights depending on the project. Some field assignments can keep you away for up to two weeks at a time. Winter / Shop Season: Generally 40 hours per week in the Edmonton shop, starting around 7:30–8:00 AM.
