Components Engineer/Specialist
to strengthen the reliability and scalability of their hardware products by providing technical oversight of electronic component selection and sourcing. This role evaluates component choices, identifies and qualifies alternate sources, and helps reduce dependency on single-source components to support both existing products and future designs. The final title (Components Engineer or Specialist) will reflect the successful candidate’s qualifications.
Key Responsibilities
Review and technically assess electronic component selections for existing products, new designs, and design changes
Identify alternate manufacturers, vendors, and technically suitable replacement components to reduce single-source dependencies
Evaluate and qualify second sources for key components through technical analysis, bench testing, and cross-team collaboration
Build and maintain alternate sourcing options to improve supply continuity, enable competitive quoting, and identify cost-reduction opportunities
Partner with design engineers early in development to identify components with multiple viable sources
Act as a technical gatekeeper for component selection, constructively challenging choices that create sourcing, lifecycle, or supply risk
Support a disciplined exception process for components that must remain single-sourced, including documentation and management review
Evaluate component specifications, performance, compatibility, availability, and manufacturer information to support sound technical decisions
Maintain thorough documentation of component evaluations, approved alternatives, sourcing information, and test results
Collaborate with hardware engineering, manufacturing engineering, and supply chain partners to address shortages and obsolescence
Develop strong knowledge of key component manufacturers, distributors, and market options
Support documentation and component-control discipline needed to scale manufacturing and work with contract manufacturing partners
Qualifications
Electrical/electronics engineering degree, or a relevant technical diploma with equivalent hands-on experience
5+ years of experience in electronics design, components engineering, component selection, or a closely related hardware engineering role
Strong analog electronics experience and the ability to assess component suitability from both a technical and application perspective
Experience working with electronic component manufacturers, distributors, vendors, and supply chains
Experience identifying, evaluating, and qualifying alternate components or second sources
Comfortable performing bench testing and using electronic lab equipment to validate component performance
Strong technical documentation skills
Preferred Skills
Experience with RF electronics
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation
Experience working in hardware product development and/or electronics manufacturing environments
Broad familiarity with electronic component manufacturers and suppliers across the market
What Success Looks Like
Confident, constructive communication when challenging component choices or technical decisions
Strong collaboration across product development, hardware engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams
Resilient, persistent follow-through that drives long-term improvements in sourcing and design practices
Disciplined documentation habits paired with the ability to balance performance, cost, availability, and lifecycle considerations
