Since 1975 The Mustard Seed Street Church has been essential in fighting hunger and restoring faith to our community in Greater Victoria. Our operations are nearly 100 percent community funded and include Vancouver Island's largest and most accessible Food Bank; daily meals, coffee, and snacks; Hospitality programs; and a Food Security Distribution Centre. We offer church services and community building faith-based programming, as well as pastoral care for those seeking a place to belong and grow spiritually. Through these core programs we assist over 5,000 people each month with the help of more than 50 daily volunteers and many generous financial supporters!
Position Overview
The position of Market Support Worker supports the Mustard Seed Street Church Market (Food Bank) primarily through focusing on shipping/receiving from our warehouse as well as donations from the general public. This includes unloading pallets, organizing and rotating stock, cleaning, and generally maintaining the day-to-day operations of a very busy food bank working with other staff to deliver the best service and quality food to meet the needs of low-income individuals and families.
Key Responsibilities
Food Receiving, Inventory & Storage
Receiving food and other items from the Food Security Distribution Centre (FSDC), as well as public donations.
Unloading, building and wrapping pallets.
Monitoring inventory and placing orders for stock from the FSDC.
Ensure all food safety standards established by Food Banks Canada are followed regarding food storage, food movement, food handling, and distribution.
Ensure proper rotation of food products and oversee breakdown of products as appropriate.
Market Operations & Food Distribution
Assist with set-up, service and breakdown of the Market, including keeping shelves stocked.
The daily service through “the U” to our community. This involves scheduling and delegating tasks for volunteers and, as needed, filling scheduling gaps.
Prepare hampers for appointments as needed.
Prepare compost and recycling for pickup.
Facility, Food Storage & Cleaning
Clean and organize the walk-in cooler, walk-in freezer, small freezer, dairy cases, floors and shelves.
Maintain organized, clean and safe food storage and work areas according to established safe work practices.
Guest Services, Volunteers & Community Support
Scheduling of volunteers, including absences due to illness or vacations.
Providing orientation, training, direction and support to volunteers.
Support for the operations of Guest Services when needed.
Work with fellow staff to provide the best possible service and to address issues arising with community members.
Other duties as required.

Qualifications
Experience working in a warehouse or supermarket environment an asset
Experience in a charity or non profit setting an asset
Competency in Microsoft and Excel
Food Safe Level 1 (or willing to obtain)
First Aid (or willing to obtain)
Valid Driver’s license an asset (Class 5)
Ability to safely life and move up to 40lbs
Ability to stand for entire shit

Must be willing to sign the staff Code of Conduct
Must be willing to read, agree and sign the MSSC HR Manual
This position reports to: Operations Manager
Term: Full Time, paid bi-weekly
Wage: $22.00 - $27.00 per hour,
Hours: Monday to Friday 7:30-3:30
The MSSC follows BC Employment Standards for terminations
Must provide an acceptable vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check prior to start date
