Position Overview:
On behalf of my client, a leader in surfacing and building products across Canada, we are seeking a Director of Marketing & Specifications to lead specification strategy, market positioning, and commercial alignment to support growth. This leadership role will ensure specification development, brand positioning, competitive intelligence, and training infrastructure translate into measurable revenue and margin performance. The Director reports to the VP, Business Development and will manage a multi-functional team (Manager, Marketing; Manager, Product Knowledge & Training (future); Manager, Specifications).
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and execute a structured specifications strategy to increase pull-through demand across priority product categories.
Strengthen relationships with the Architect & Design community to secure early positioning in the specification cycle.
Align specification efforts with sales execution to convert specified projects into realized revenue.
Oversee CEU programming, Lunch & Learns, trade engagement, and technical education initiatives to build credibility and preference.
Monitor specification trends, project pipelines, and influence channels to anticipate market shifts and inform strategy.
Lead annual promotional investment planning (trade shows, digital initiatives, A&D engagement, events).
Coordinate cross-functional alignment between Marketing, Sales, Branch Operations, and Supply Chain to support project realization.
Establish KPI frameworks that connect specification activity to measurable revenue and margin performance.
Conduct competitive intelligence, pricing research, and market share analysis to identify opportunity gaps and guide strategic responses.
Lead research into new markets (geographic expansion, product applications, industry verticals) and translate findings into initiatives.
Lead, coach, and develop the marketing & specifications team, including hiring, performance management, succession planning, and compensation recommendations.
Ensure structured onboarding and product knowledge programs support technical credibility with the design community.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and measurable results.
Qualifications:
Minimum 7 years' experience in building products, B2B distribution, or manufacturing with strong understanding of specification-driven sales cycles and the Architect & Design community.
At least 3 years' leadership experience managing and developing marketing, specification, or cross-functional commercial teams.
Experience supporting general contractors, millworkers, fabricators, and commercial interior projects, with understanding of how specifications translate into project delivery.
Strong strategic thinking, analytical capability, and executive communication skills.
Balance of big-picture vision and disciplined operational follow-through.
Bonus Points:
Experience in surfacing, building materials, architectural products, or interior finish industries.
Strong understanding of Western Canadian market dynamics and A&D influence channels.
Experience building structured training infrastructure tied to commercial performance.
Background in scaling marketing functions during business expansion.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Architecture, Interior Design, or a related field preferred.
