The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for leading and supervising the development of concept, basic, functional design engineering packages and production through Build support. This role requires maintaining close coordination with clients, classification societies, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure technical quality and project alignment.
The Senior Structural Engineer must exercise strong attention to detail to review progress, verify compliance with specifications, and ensure high-quality deliverables. Projects include a range of vessel types, from advanced research and science ships to non-combat naval vessels.
Responsibilities:
Provide expert advice on all structural aspects of ship design and construction.
Offer technical solutions to structural design and production challenges throughout the project lifecycle.
Apply deep understanding of ship design and production principles to ensure efficient and compliant structures.
Apply structural design first principles to develop robust and efficient ship structures.
Drive negotiations with class or client for all structural issues arising within the shipyard.
Strong knowledge and experience in hull structural design and scantling calculations based on Class Rules and First Principle calculation including: global and local strength, vibration, buckling, and fatigue.
Comprehensive knowledge of classification society rules and standards (e.g., LR, DNV, ABS IACS)
Familiar with classification society structural design software packages such as LR RulesCalc, DNV Poseidon, BV Mars and ABS’s.
Perform finite element analysis (FEA) for both local and global strength assessments.
Maintain a broad understanding of related disciplines, including naval architecture, mechanical systems, outfitting, and electrical systems, to support integrated design decisions.
Knowledge of lifting, turning, docking, and undocking operations desirable.
Proficient with analysis tools such as FEMAP, Abaqus, SolidWorks and Multiframe (2D Beam)
Review and assess structural drawings for compliance with classification society rules, national and international regulations, and project specifications.
Prepare and review clear and detailed technical specifications, reports, and procedures.
Understanding of IMO conventions and codes (e.g., Load Line, SOLAS, COLREGS, MARPOL, SPS Code) and their structural implications.
Advanced Knowledge of shipbuilding and repair welding standards, quality requirements, and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques.
Proficient with AutoCAD (2D & 3D) for ship structural design.
Experienced in Navisworks and ShipConstructor for 3D model review and data extraction.
Familiar with Cadmatic for inspection and manipulation of 3D ship structural models.
Great Communication skills including writing and presenting.
Good Understanding of Earned Value Management system and project financial execution.
Requirements:
A Degree in Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Minimum 7-10 years’ in a similar position (Naval Architect/ Mechanical Engineering) with heavy involvement in Ship Structure Design
Must hold chartered/Professional Engineer status P.Eng
Good working knowledge of the following software: AutoCAD, Femap, Multiframe, ShipConstructor, SolidWorks, Navisworks. Cadmatic and MS Office
Knowledgeable in IMO, SOLAS and Classification Society Rules.
New build / repair shipyard experience desired
Familiar with project quality, schedule, and cost performance metrics
Experienced with team management and supervision
Provides strategic guidance on complex structural engineering challenges, ensuring solutions are robust, compliant, and aligned with project objectives.
Demonstrates exceptional ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across diverse cultural and professional environments.
Possesses deep technical knowledge in ship structural engineering, applying first principles and classification rules to solve complex projects.
Gathers, and analyzes complex technical data, validating its accuracy, and using it to support critical engineering decisions.
Advanced knowledge of Material Strength and Vibration using First principal calcs and Finite Element Analysis.
Produces and reviews clear, detailed technical specifications, procedures, reports, and presentations for clients, classification societies, and internal teams.
Understands project financials, purchasing processes, and management systems, including MS Project, to support effective project planning and execution.
Maintains organization in dynamic environments, effectively multitasking, setting priorities, and managing various projects.
Willing and able to travel as required to support project delivery, inspections, and client meetings.
Promotes a culture of safety and ensures compliance with all relevant regulations, classification requirements, and corporate safety policies.
Builds strong relationships across disciplines, mentors junior engineers, and resolves conflicts effectively.
Delivers high-quality oral and written communication, including technical briefings and presentations to clients, management, and regulatory authorities.
Exercises sound engineering judgment and makes informed decisions consistent with corporate values, project goals, and technical best practices.
