What You'll Do
Reporting to a Discipline Lead, the role of an Automation and SCADA Engineer/Designer is designing and implementing of automation systems and communication infrastructure in electrical facilities for the Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sectors. An automation and SCADA Engineer/Designer will apply their knowledge and experience to analyze, evaluate, and create new designs, drawings and revise existing designs, drawings and programs with guidance from senior engineering personnel, as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Create detailed technical drawings, specifications, design studies and technical reports to meet client(s) requirements
Apply and maintain knowledge of relevant and new legislations, standards, regulations, guides and good practise to projects
Review and follow-up on drawings to ensure compliance with equipment specifications
Provide assistance and feedback in the design process
Compute and establish manufacturing, construction, installation standards and specifications from detailed calculations
Apply principles of electrical theory to engineering projects through planning and implementation of procedures
Balance Office Design and Configurations with Field Support Engineering Implementation
Assess and troubleshoot in the field configuration and communication challenges
Apply knowledge of components, arrangements, and standards to complete design packages for substations that include, but are not limited to, schematics, wiring diagrams, load studies, and bills of materials.
Competent in basic computer skills to include Microstation, Autocad, Trane Software, SEL acSELerator and Microsoft Office products
Good Knowledge of relevant legislations, standards, regulations, guides and good practise (CSA, ANSI, IEC and IEEE standards.)
Familiarity in design of electrical facilities for Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sector
Requirements
What We're Looking For
Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, or a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution
Eligible for registration with APEGA or ASET
2–8 years of experience in the utilities industry is preferred
Experience in engineering, design, construction, or commissioning of electrical facilities within Transmission & Distribution, Power Generation, Industrial, or Renewable Energy sectors is an asset
Proficiency in medium and high-voltage power systems
Knowledge of industry protocols and standards (IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5, DNP3, Modbus) and related cybersecurity standards (IEC 62351, NERC CIP)
Working knowledge of control systems (SCADA, RTUs, PLCs) and network architecture (firewalls, switches, port servers)
Familiarity with platforms such as GE, Siemens, ABB, Eaton, SEL, Allen Bradley, Survalent, Honeywell, AES, Palo Alto, or Fortinet
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics
Strong organizational, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Experience using computer-assisted engineering and design software and tools
