Job Description
Full‑time TERM position for Student Services Department Head, Octagon Pond Elementary, Paradise. Duties to commence September 8, 2026, until June 25, 2027, or until Incumbent Returns.
As Student Services Department Head, you are part of the school's leadership team and committed to furthering NLSchools goals for student success in an inclusive, safe and caring environment. You will have a student‑first philosophy expressed in previous teaching experience.
Reporting to the school principal or designate, you will provide direction and support to teachers, teaching and learning assistants, and student assistants in the area of student services and special education. As part of the school leadership team, you will assist in the development of annual staffing plans for schools, ensuring schools are programmed and scheduled appropriately to meet the needs of all students and facilitating school‑based collaboration related to service delivery. You will provide advice to school administrators and collaborate with staff in initiatives that foster student success. You will coordinate professional development for program initiatives and identify and build on the strengths within your department.
As a member of the leadership team, your work will be guided by the Atlantic Provinces Standards of Practice for School‑based Administrators, which include: Leading for Learning and Managing Change; Engaging Families and Communities; Shaping a Safe, Inclusive, and Positive Learning Environment; Building the Leadership Potential of Others; Demonstrating Professionalism; Promoting Health and Well‑Being; and Managing School Operations and Resources.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Foundations of Special Education – understands and applies knowledge of the foundations of special education.
Development and Characteristics of Learners – understands the development and characteristics of learners.
Educational Assessment – understands the educational assessment process and uses a variety of assessment strategies to support the development of students.
Planning Instruction – understands the diversity of students' strengths and needs and applies this knowledge when planning instruction.
Delivering Instruction – applies knowledge of students' strengths and needs when delivering instruction.
Learning Environment – helps create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, independence and self‑motivation.
Collaborative Partnerships – understands the importance of building collaborative partnerships to enhance student learning.
Reflective Practice – continually evaluates his/her practice and actively seeks professional growth opportunities to enhance student learning.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Education
Bachelor of Special Education or equivalent
NL Teaching Certificate – Level IV or higher
Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience
Demonstrated experience as a leader at the school, department, and/or provincial level
Annual Teacher Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.
